    COMPETITIONS

     

    Allotments competiton

    ALLOTMENTS COMPETITION A detailed information sheet relating to the competition will be sent to every allotment holder who is a member of the Society, and is also available to others on request. The following are the main points. The competition is open to all registered tenants of allotments in Maldon and Heybridge, which are administered by the council. Entry to the competition is automatic and there is no entry fee. All plots will be judged on the same day, sometime during June or July, but the date will not be notified to plot holders in advance of judging. Judging will be according to the following points system:

    CULTIVATION, NEATNESS ETC. 40 points
    QUALITY 20 points
    VEGETABLE (VARIETY) 25 points
    FRUIT (VARIETY) 10 points
    COMPOST BIN 5 points


    All points are the maximum obtainable - total of 100 points The tenant of the plot which gains the most points will receive a certificate, a £5 voucher plus £5 cheque and "The Alderman Turner Cup", which will be presented at the Society's Summer Show. The trophy may be retained for approximately one year but must be returned to the Society by 1st July the following year. The tenant of the plot which gains the next highest points will receive a certificate and £5 voucher. On any matter arising, the decision of the Society shall be final.

     

    Janshaven Cup

    The 'Janshaven Cup' is a series of competitions that take place at the monthly members meetings throughout the year. Points are awarded as follows 1st :- 4pts, 2nd :- 3pts, 3rd :- 2pts, you receive 1 pt if you enter the competition but do not receive a place. 

    The competition is to be judged by the members at each meeting using an anonymous voting paper. The points for each evening are recorded and at the last meeting of the year (November) they are totalled up and the trophy awarded to the persons with the highest points. 

    The competitions are open, but the cup can only be won by a Society member. Obviously entries should be the work of the person in whose name it is entered. 

    The following subject has been chosen for this year, just bring your exhibit along on the evening. Points are accrued towards the Janshaven Cup and £5.00 cheque. 

    For every meeting this year the subject is: One flowering stem or branch from your garden.

     

    Best Kept Garden Competition
    The Maldon Town Cup will be awarded to the person presenting the "Best Kept Front Garden " within the town boundary of Maldon and Heybridge. Anyone wishing to enter this competition may do so, there is no need to be a member of the Maldon and Heybridge Horticultural Society, entries can only be accepted from amateur gardeners. Listed below are the rules of the competition, together with an entry form. 

    This should be completed and returned to the Show Secretary by the 15th June each year. 

    RULES 

    1. The competition is for the "Best Kept Front Garden" within the town boundary of Maldon and Heybridge. 

    2. The front gardens will be judged during June/July and judging will be according to the following point system (more details available on request). 

    Condition of Garden 20 points
    Cultivation 15 points
    Quality & suitability of trees/shrubs 15 points
    Quality & suitability of perennials 15 points
    Quality & suitability of bedding 15 points
    Layout & plantingg 10 points
    Other features 10 points

     

    3. The competition is open to all those who do not employ assistance regularly. 

    4. Entries must be returned to the Show Secretary:- Mrs.G.Coppen 2 Queen Street, Maldon CM9 5DP by the 15th June each year. 

    5. The cup will be presented to the winner at the Maldon and Heybridge Horticultural Society's Summer Show at 4.45p.m. at the United Reformed Hall, Maldon. 

    6. The cup must be returned to the Society by the 1st July each year. 

    7. The Judge's decision will be final.

     

    Haloween Highlights Competition
    WORLD RECORD: 495kg (1,092lbs) - U.K. RECORD: 199.50kg (440lbs) M.H.H.S. RECORD (2002) : MISS P PERRY 164.06kg (374.87 lbs) 

    Why not join in the fun and grow a pumpkin for this competition, which will be held at the Annual General Meeting (it will come in handy for Halloween too!). Just bring your pumpkin along on the night to enter. The following simple rules apply to the competition: 

    1. The pumpkin must have been grown in the exhibitor's own greenhouse, grounds, or allotment and must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for at least two months prior to the competition date. 

    2. Only one entry permitted per exhibitor. 

    3. This is an open competition and there is no need to be a member of the Maldon and Heybridge Horticultural Society. 

    4. The trophy must be returned to the Society by the 15th September each year. 

    5. On any matter arising the decision of the Society shall be final.

    CLASSES

    1.  Heaviest Pumpkin Competition 1st prize £10, Pumpkin Trophy & Silver Tankard, 2nd £7.50. 3rd £5.

    2.  Pumpkin Carving Competition

    3.  Squash - One with Stem. any variety.

    4.  Gourds - Collection of 5 in a basket, a well balanced display for effect.

    Prize Money for Classes 2, 3, 4:    1st prize £1, 2nd 75p, 3rd 50p.


    Sunflower Competition
    U.K. RECORD: 7.175m (23ft 6.5ins) M.H.H.S. RECORD (1998): CHRISTOPHER WHITE 5.424m (17ft 9ins) 

    RULES 

    1. The competition is open to:Adults and children who live within the town boundary of Maldon & Heybridge 

    2. Entry to the competition will be free. 

    3. Entrants may use either their own seed or that which is provided by the Horticultural Society. 

    4. Any entrant who wishes to qualify for a prize shall notify the height of their sunflower to the Horticultural Society no later than 15th September each year. 

    5. It is permissible to prop up the stalk when taking the measurement, which should be made from ground level to the tip of the plant. 

    6. The Horticultural Society reserves the right to measure any sunflower which qualifies for a prize. 

    7. The cup must be returned to the Society by the 1st September each year. 

    8. Any matter arising which is not governed by the rules will be referred to the Society for decision which shall be final.
